Upgrading our database server (again)

August 28th, 2011

Database ServerYes, we’re upgrading the hardware of the Collectorz.com central online database server again.

This server is the host of all five online media databases, for movies, books, music, comic books and video games.
In other words, this central machine is the source of all search results, the items details and all cover images that you get when using your Add Automatically screen.

Our Connect web-apps, the online editions of our software, are also located on this database server.

And finally, it runs the online part of the CLZ Barry system. It is this machine that generates your Barry ID for you and what lets Barry and Buddy “talk to each other”.

You can imagine how important this server is to us and to you all, our customers 🙂 Ensuring this system is fast and always up and running is essential. So that’s why we’re giving it more powerrr !

Here’s a cool video showing how CLZ Barry can be used with the Collectorz.com programs.

Like what you see? Then get CLZ Barry for iPhone/iPad here
or just to go the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and search for “clz barry”.

Our clz.com domain is now the new home of the Collectorz.com mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. Currently, only the CLZ Barry product site is on the clz.com domain, but we will soon movie the product pages of all other CLZ mobile apps here.

Just a quick message to Barry Club members to let you know that Apple has approved our CLZ Barry 1.0.2 build and it’s now live in the App Store.

This build 2 fixes the crashes some Comic Collector users have reported, plus a couple of other problems (full What’s New list is included below).

If you own an iPhone 3G or better, iPod touch 4th gen or an iPad 2,
then now’s the time to buy Barry.

You have probably seen them around on your favorite websites:
Google’s new “+1” buttons.

And now the Collectorz.com site has them too!

So what do these buttons mean? What are they for? Well, Google itself does a fine job explaining this, so let me just quote them:

Movie Collector 8 was reviewed by Harry Thomas of the San Antonio Express-News.

“I had bypassed upgrading my Movie Collector database software from version 6 to 7 because I didn’t see any point in it. The new features they were advertising weren’t necessary for my collection. But when they announced version 8 a few weeks ago, something caught my eye: the addition of trailers.

Our current Mac OS X developer Dinh has been offered a great job in San Francisco (congrats!) and thus will be leaving Collectorz.com.

Which means we are looking for a new Mac OS X developer to help us finalize the new Comic Collector for Mac and to create major upgrades of the Mac editions of Movie, Book and Music Collector.

Are you experienced in Mac OS X programming, or fluent in iOS development, or a smart programmer interested in Mac development? Then read on…

Alice in Wonderland movie backdropOn Tuesday (4 days ago), we launched Movie Collector V8 for Windows. Since then, over 5,000 users have already upgraded to the new version!

Not surprisingly, because the list of shiny new features is huge. However, the list is getting longer.

You see, one day after the release a smart user sent us a brilliant suggestion that we just had to implement:

* Why can’t we use the movie backdrops as the background for the details panel?

Movie Collector 8 for Windows

Yes, it’s finally available: Movie Collector for Windows!

This week, our support guys received a Barry question that worries me a bit.

Here it is:

“Will CLZ Barry also work with my Collectorz.com software?”

Wow… Have I been focusing too much on Barry’s general applicability?
(“send scanned barcodes to any program, any textbox on your PC or Mac”)

It’s epidemic

July 1st, 2011

On June 28 one of our customers tweeted “@collectorz I am loving the Comic software and scanner. Cannot find in the instructions how to catalog without re-reading old issues ;-)”
This resulted in comments like ” I have that problem myself – though I’m not complaining about it” and “It must be an epidemic. I’m suffering that disease as well”.

Being a collector too, I suffer from that illness as well.

2 questions we were getting more and more often:

  • How can I buy multiple licenses or barcode scanners in one go? (preferably at a discount)
  • Can I get some extra discount if I buy Movie Collector and Book Collector at the same time?

Not anymore. As of yesterday, our Collectorz.com shop has built-in and automatically applied Quantity and Bundle discounts.

Mickie strikes a pose

In our April newsletter, we asked for your feedback on our online databases, the databases that provide the data and images for your Add Automatically screen.
We created 5 surveys, one for each database, and asked you to rate a list of possible problems, choosing from “Not a problem for me”, “Could be improved” and “Yeah, this sucks!”.

We’re happy that a lot of people took the time to complete these surveys. We received 3,251 responses!
Thank you all for you help!

We have created nice bar charts of the responses we received for all 5 surveys, with orange bars for “Not a problem”, blue bars for “Could be improved” and purple bars for “Yeah, this sucks!”.
Looking at the charts below, we’re happy to see a lot of orange and only small purple areas. It seems that overall, you all are quite happy with the results of our online databases. 🙂
Read on for results in more details, for each of the five online databases.
