Collectorz.com Newsletter July 2008

Hi,

Here's our monthly update on the happeningz at Collectorz.com.

We are finalizing a number of projects at the moment, cleaning our plates a bit and getting ready to start on a big new project. More about the big one later, I'll keep you posted through this newsletter.

Major upgrade for Game Collector: version 3

Yep, it has finally arrived, the major upgrade for Game Collector. Long overdue, I admit, the last Game Collector update was 18 months ago (ouch). But I am sure this one more than makes up for it.

Version 3 brings Game Collector up-to-date which all new features we introduced in our other programs. But next to that, it now features a completely new Add Automatically screen, which uses the Collectorz.com online game database only.
This 'one source' approach has made it possible to tighten up the integration with the online database:

  • Select multiple games from your search results (e.g. all "Mario" games on the Wii) and add them all in one go
  • Add games quickly using the new "Most Popular" or "New Releases" lists (per platform)
  • Automatic updates of the available platform list
Check it out here.
Of course this was only possible because of the huge improvements of our online game database. Our game-guy Rowdy has been working on that full-time in the past couple of months.
Discuss the online game database on our forum.

Searching CDs in Music Collector

Lately some of you have notified us about varying results when searching our online CD database from Music Collector. And you guys were right, in some cases the search results were "less than optimal" :-)
Our new programmer Dinh dived into the Search code and ultimately decided to rewrite it all. And that helped. CD ID and Artist/Title searches now produce better results and are faster too.

Check it out and let us know your feedback.

How we saved a life

Every month we try to include a true collector story in our newsletter. We like these stories best and from the replies we receive after sending one out, you too. Imagine our surprise when we found out that at least two well known people use our software:
  • Martha Stewart about Book Collector: "A very practical yet inexpensive computer program, with which anyone can become a librarian."
  • J. Michael Straczynski (movie and TV series writer) goes one step further: "The wonderful folks at collectorz.com, and their remarkable software, saved my life."

Meet The Collector: James C. Gebbia

Here's James, telling us about how he uses Music Collector to manage his huge CD collection.

"My name is James C. Gebbia I live in the desert southwest in the wonderful state of Arizona in the great country of UNITED STATES.

I have at this time of writing 11,021 silver pressed factory cds not including 99 cdrs of various colors that are band and/or band authorized issued. I add about 25-50 cds monthly to my collection. I have been using MUSIC COLLECTOR to manage my cd collection now for about 3 years. I mainly listen to all genres of rock music from 1964 to present. I realy enjoy MUSIC COLLECTOR it keeps my collection very well organized alphabetically by band name, title of cd, year released, label and number of tracks.

Without MUSIC COLLECTOR I wouldn't know what to do with my collection. I love to add to the database when I find that rare cd that's not in the database but that's pretty uncommon."

- Happy Collecting -
