Newsletter August 2007

Dear collector,

In this newsletter:

Collectorz.com Connect update

Since June we have been working on the Collectorz.com Connect pages, the new homes for our online product databases for DVDs, CDs, comics and games. Here's an update on our progress:

Top Tip: The Collectorz.com forum is the place to be

Our forum is a nice place to meet other collectors and talk about your hobby. Lots of conversations are about collecting, storing your valuables, what favorites you own and about books, movies, music and whatnot in general.
Of course it's also a good place to visit if you have questions about our software. Search the forum, maybe your question has already been asked and answered for.
When you want to start posting messages you'll need a forum account. Creating an account is free and you can do so using the Register link at the top right of the forum page. Visit the forum!

The Big Question: How to use the Title Sorting?

This is a question we get quite often: How do I sort my database properly from A to Z, and not on articles like 'The' or 'A'?
For example: in Book Collector you've added 'The Good Guy' by Dean Koontz. When you sort your books by Title in List View, you'll see it listed under 'T' instead of 'G'. The Collectorz.com software can solve this by breaking down a title into two parts: the body (Good Guy) and the article (The).
Here's how to do that.
Select the book you want to edit and use the Edit Book option. The Edit Book screen opens on the Main tab. Under the Title field box, you'll find the 'Title Sort' and 'Title The' boxes. Enter 'Good Guy' into the Title Sort box and 'The' in the Title The box. Click on OK and refresh your List View. Now you'll find the book in the correct place, under 'G'.
All Collectorz.com programs use the standard Title field values. If you manually enter the Title Sort fields, these will be used instead. So it is not necessary to enter the Title Sort for all books, only those which start with articles.

Meet The Collector: Chris Burnham and his comic collection

Chris lives in Snoqualmie, WA (near Seattle) and has collected comics for over 33 years. The first comics he read were Incredible Hulk #181 with the historic first appearance of Wolverine and a few months later, Fantastic Four #156. The Fantastic Four comic led to a lifelong love of this quartet which continues today.
Chris collects comics, art and statues and you can see a few pictures of his vast collection (more than 22,000!) in the photos thread on the Collectorz.com forum.
In addition to a full-time job in the software industry, Chris also helps out administering the Comic Collector database and talking to other collectors in the forum.
Some other fun facts about Chris:

Your favorite CDs, movies, games and comics

Music, Movie, Game and Comic Collector use our online databases to retrieve details and cover art. It's fun to see what the most popular titles are over the last four weeks.
Although we don't maintain our own online database for books, we Muggles can fairly guess which book holds the top position for a couple of months now…
