Adding CDs to your database

Automatically catalog CDs.
Instantly download full album details and cover art.

Cataloging CDs by inserting the discs

If you are cataloging CDs, then inserting the actual disc into your computer is the recommended way to add them to your database. Scanning the actual disc results in a CDID which is the quickest and most accurate way to search our online CD database.
  1. Insert the CD in your computer. Music Collector automatically sees the CD-ID.
  2. No need to enter Artist and Title and no need to select your specific edition, the search results will automatically return the exact CD edition that you own.
  3. Click Add to add the CD to your database.

Add CDs Automatically by inserting them in your computer

Cataloging albums by Artist and Title

An easy way to add CDs and vinyl records to your database:
  • 1. Enter the album's artist and title, and click Search Now.
  • 2. Select your album from the Search Results.
  • 3. Click Add Selected to add the album to your database.

Add Albums Automatically by Artist and Title

Music Collector will autocomplete the author when you type. Or use the dropdown box to quickly select one of the artists you already have in your database.

Add Albums Automatically Autocomplete and Dropdown box

If you wish to filter the results on format, that's possible too:

Cataloging CDs by barcode

  • You can also scan barcodes to add CDs to your collection.
  • No need to enter the artist and title of the CDs, the search results will automatically return the album you're looking for.

The Collectorz.com online music database

Music data sources

Music data and cover images are provided by our own Collectorz.com online CD database, currently containing over 3.3 million CDs and more than 42 million tracks.
If a particular CDID cannot be found in our own CD database, our search engine automatically continues the search in the open online CD databases of FreeDb and Music Brainz.

Next to those CD-specific sources, our online search engine also provides results from Discogs, a great resource for album covers and particularly useful when cataloging vinyl records.

Automatic data for CDs

Music Collector automatically downloads:

Album information:
  • Artist / Composer
  • Title
  • Format
  • Label
  • Catalog number
  • Release date
  • Genres
  • Number of tracks
  • Total duration
Images
  • Front Covers
  • Back Covers

Full Track Lists, with:
  • Track Titles
  • Track Artists
  • Track duration

Finding more cover images online

In some cases our Collectorz.com online music database may not give you a cover image, or a cover image that does not exactly match your edition.
That is where the Find Cover Image tool comes in. It lets you find cover images anywhere on the internet (using a Google Images search) and add them to your database in just a few clicks.

Find Cover Image

Cataloging music files (MP3, MP4, M4A, OGG, FLAC, etc…)

  • Let Music Collector scan your harddisk or iTunes library and add the found music files automatically
  • Supports meta-tag data (including ID3v2 cover images)
    • Supported audio formats: MP3, MP4, M4A, Flac, OGG Vorbis, MPC, APE, Flac, WMA, WAV, AIF(F), M4R and AC3.
    • Supported tag formats: ID3v1, ID3v2, Vorbis, WMA and APE
  • Then use Update Albums Automatically to download album information
(like genres & cover images) from the Collectorz.com online database.
  • Or, link the found music files to existing entries in your music database.
  • Use the Play button in the Details View, or Play button on the toolbar, to play the music files.

Classical Music

Music Collector includes special fields for cataloging classical music: Composer, Orchestra, Composition entries (with Title, Composer, Key, Opus and Date), Chorus, etc...
Here's an example of the classical fields in the Edit Album screen:
