Can I control the next Index value assigned?

The index number is automatically increased each time you add a book.

You can re-assign the index field by clicking: Tools > Maintenance > Re-assign Index

You can also control the next Index number. Go to:

Tools > Options > General Tab > Auto Increment Index > Next Index
Click OK.

Mac: Click Book Collector > Preferences
