Exporting your collection

Exporting your collection

Using the Export feature of Movie Collector you can export to various different files such as Text and HTML. Besides files, it also support exporting to handheld devices such as a PocketPC, iPod, iPod Touch and iPhone! You need the PRO version of Movie Collector to do this. Find out how to upgrade here!

Exporting to Text or CSV

Exporting to text will generate a simple list of your movies. You can export any field you like, and save it as a .txt file, or as a .csv file. If you export to CSV (Comma Separated Value) you can also open the file with Excel.

  • Choose File / Export to / Text to open the Export to Text File screen
  • Use the Browse button to choose the destination folder and file name, e.g. mymovies.txt (or mymovies.csv) on your USB stick.
  • For the other settings, select:
    • Movies to export: All Movies
    • Sort Order: Sort on Title
    • Include Field Names on First Row: Yes
    • Delimiter: Semicolon
    • Text Qualifier: Double Quote
  • Use the Fields button to select which fields to print as columns
  • Finally, click the Export button to create the file.

If you have saved your exported file as a CSV, you can open it in Excel. Start Excel, and open the csv file you saved. Excel will place the fields properly into columns.

You can not import the data back into our software.

Exporting to HTML

Using File / Export to HTML, you can export your database to HTML. The screen works much like the export to Text screen.

Click the Index Template and Details Template tags to make changes to the layout, feel and look of your page.

After exporting, you will have a folder containing images and HTML files which you can upload to your website to publish it.

Exporting to iPhone or iPod Touch

Using the export to iPhone or iPod Touch enables you to view your collection including covers on your iPhone/iPod Touch. To use this feature you need the Clz Movies application on your iPhone/iPod Touch that you can get from the Apple AppStore.

Movie Collector 6.2 and up has an "Export to iPhone" feature to send your collection (including front cover images) to your iPhone or iPod Touch application over Wi-Fi.

Here's how you can do this: First, you need a Wi-Fi connection on your iPhone or iPod Touch, connecting to the same local network (LAN) that your Windows PC computer is in. You can not transfer data using your standard iPhone cable, Apple does not allow 3rd party developers to use that cable. Then just follow these simple steps:

  1. In the iPhone app, go to the Import page. This will make your app visible on the Wi-Fi network
  2. Now start your Movie Collector program and choose Export to iPhone.
  3. Wait until it detects your iPhone app.
  4. Click the Export button.
  5. That's it. Movie Collector will export your data and transfer it to your iPhone or iTouch.

Exporting to iPod Notes

Don't have an iPhone or iPod Touch, but you do have an iPod? If it supports iPod Notes you can export quite some items to iPod Notes using Movie Collector!

First, your iPod must be "enabled for disk use".
You can enable this through iTunes:

  • Connect your iPod to your computer, either using a USB cable or by putting it into its dock.
  • Start iTunes
  • In iTunes, choose Edit | Preferences and switch to the "Summary screen" of the connected ipod.
  • Make sure the "Enable Disk use" checkbox is checked.
  • Click OK.

This should make your iPod appear as a Removable Disk in My Computer and the Windows Explorer.

After following the above steps, use the Find my iPod button (this button can be found under "File > Export to > iPod Notes") and your iPod will appear in the Destination iPod box.

Please note that iPod Notes can only handle 1000 files. Each Item Detail Page is a separate file, so this means that when using the Export Item Detail Pages option the number of items you can export is limited to 1000 (maybe less if you have other files in your iPod Notes section already).

We recommend that you try the export without Detail Pages, which generate a list of items only. Just uncheck the Export Item Detail Pages option.
