Update File Links
Introduction
Movie Collector can create links to files on your computer. If you then move those files, Movie Collector doesn't know where to find them. This can affect your images, or, if you have linked digital movies, the movies will no longer play. Movie Collector has a built in tool for automatically fixing links, if you wish to move your images or digital files to a new location, you can tell Movie Collector where to find them.

Fixing broken Links
Here's how to fix your broken links:
- In Movie Collector, click Tools > Maintenance > Update File Links
- If you have broken links, they'll be shown in the Update File Links screen
- You can use the filter in the top right corner to view different types of broken links
You then have two options, Automatic or Manual.
Manual
Click Manual and you'll see a screen showing where Movie Collector thinks your current items are stored (Current Base Folder). This will vary depending on which file type you've selected from the main Update File Links screen. The New Base Folder indicates where the new items are.
Click Browse and select the new folder location. You should notice the New Folder field is now populated with the new location.
Click Update and Movie Collector will repair the links.
Tip: The File Type filter allow you to fix specific links. This is particularly useful if you've moved both images and digital files. You can then specify different folders for your images, music, or other digital files. Use the File Type filter in the top left of the Update File Links screen to filter the list.

Automatic
The automatic feature makes relinking even easier but it can take a while longer, depending on how automatic you'd like it to be. This is quite useful if you have a very long list of broken links, if you've moved multiple types of data (images, digital music etc) or if your images/files have been moved, but you aren't sure where to.
Here's what to do:
- Click Automatic
- Select the folder on your computer containing your files
- Click OK, then click Update
- Movie Collector will begin scanning the selected folder, and those within it, for the broken links
This could take a while depending on how many broken links you have, as well as the folder you've selected to scan. Any links that cannot be found will remain in the Update File Links screen.
If you are trying to relink your images and the relink screen has been unable to locate them, please refer to our FAQ for more information.
