Creating a Backup
Movie Collector takes good care of your collection. It creates a Backup while you are working. You don't need to do anything special for that. The Backup is stored in the Backup folder in the Movie Collector folder on your hard disk and is called Backup of MyCollection.mvc.
Note: The .mvc file contains all information on your collection, but not the images.
Creating an External Backup
Although Movie Collector creates an immediate Backup of your collection, it's advisable to create an external backup of your complete collection (including thumbnails and images), in case your computer catches a virus. Or worse.
There's really nothing to it. Just copy the complete Movie Collector folder (with it's subfolders) to an external hard disk, a USB stick or burn it to a CD-ROM or DVD. It's easy and fast and you'll thank yourself for doing it. Really.
