Plot
Nicholas Rostov (Jeremy Brett) and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (Mel Ferrer) are soldiers in Russia's war against Napoleon in the nineteenth century. The Russian army along with Andrei and Nicholas is ready to confront Napoleon's army in central Europe. Andrei's friend, Pierre Bezukhov (Henry Fonda) doesn't want to go to war. After inheriting a fortune from his father, he ends up married to Princess Helene (Anita Ekberg), a materialistic superficial woman, even though he is attracted to Nicholas's sister Natasha (Audrey Hepburn). The marriage doesn't last for long. After being captured by the French and released, Andrei returns to Russia and sees his wife die in childbirth. A few months later, Andrei and Pierre meet again. Andrei falls in love with Natasha, but they postpone the wedding for a year because his father wants it that way. Andrei goes to another mission in Poland, and Natasha falls for a crook named Anatole Kuragin (Vittorio Gassmann). Pierre tells her about Anatole's past and they elope together. Napoleon's army invades Russia. After seeing the battle and the carnage, Pierre vows to kill Napoleon on his own.
