The Enemy Below (1957)

Set in World War II, The Enemy Below depicts the very real naval chess match between the captain of an American destroyer escort (Robert Mitchum) and a German U-boat commander (Curt Jurgens). American Captain Murrell (Mitchum) is new to his command and his crew knows little about him. When the enemy submarine is detected on radar, Murrell takes clear, decisive action to prevent the U-boat from making a connection with a German merchant ship in the South Atlantic. The destroyer can’t seem to get within range to hit the submarine. The submarine can’t evade the destroyer. Each man in command of his ship is forced to test his own wits as well as the loyalty of their respective crews.
