Higher Learning (1995)

Malik (Omar Epps) is a black male on a track scholarship, who is befriended by "Super Senior" Fudge (Ice Cube), that knows the ropes of the school. Kristen (Kristy Swanson) is a white rich girl from the O.C. . Remy (Michael Rappaport) is a timid white guy that just wants to fit in and make friends. Each student has his/her own story line that starts out separately and then eventually intertwines with the others. Fudge informs Malik that race is as big an issue in the 1990s America than it ever has been. Kristen learns that college does not offer her the same safe world she grew up in. Remy tries to fit in with his roommates, but eventually falls in with a crowd that accepts him for who he is. And all along, Professor Phipps (Laurence Fishburne) tries to guide Malik in to becoming a standup man, instead of falling in to the stereotypical "angry black man" role. Each student finds that college isn't just a place of book learning, but learning about life and how life isn't always fair. Each student does a lot of growing during their first year at Columbus University.
