Plot

Eddie Willis (Humphrey Bogart) is an aging but honest sportswriter, who finally succumbs to a corrupt fight promoter Nick Benko (Rod Steiger), by providing public relations for up-and- coming Hispanic boxing sensation Toro Moreno (Mike Lane). Despite obvious signs that the fighter is an oversized powderpuff whose opponents the promoter is buying off off to clean up on bets when he loses to the champion, the esteemed sportswriter signs on. Along the way, Eddie must solve crisis after crisis. Not the least of which are his own wife imploring him to do what's right, and the naive but well-meaning Toro's looming beating by the current titleholder (Max Baer), a sadistic and viscious fighter. When events finally turn threatening in order to keep Toro in to the end, Eddie must decide between betraying Toro's trust in him, or retrieving his reputation, and the respect by himself and those he loves.
