Plot
Prosper Meremee (Jay Benedict) a French writer on a visit to Spain witnesses the events which inspire him to write the novel, Carmen. A beautiful gypsy, Carmen (Paz Vega), who works in a cigarette factory is arrested for slashing the face of a fellow worker. A soldier, Jose, (Leonardo Sbaraglia), is supposed to be guarding her but she seduces him into letting her escape. They become lovers, even though he is a virgin. Without her factory work, Carmen turns to prostitution. Disaster strikes when she misses a meeting with Jose because she has an assignation with his commanding officer. Jose challenges the commander to a duel and kills him. Now an outlaw, Jose joins a group of bandits in the hills. Carmen joins him in their lair but their happiness is shattered when her former husband appears. The tension is too much for Jose who, egged on by Carmen, issues another challenge and kills the man. Not content, Carmen then seduces a matador and Jose's jealousy has terrible consequences.
