Plot
King Henry VIII of England (Robert Shaw), in the 16th century, wishes to break ties with the Catholic church so that he can marry another woman after divorcing his wife. Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield), a devout Catholic, refuses to give his blessing to the King and to this heretical split with the church. Others involved in this drama include Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles), Thomas Cromwell (Leo McKern), Richard Rich (John Hurt), and More’s family, Alice (Wendy Hiller) and Margaret (Susannah York). Eventually, More pays the ultimate price for standing on principle when the king will not leave him alone.
