But the stakes are too high to do anything but face them head on.

In “Halo 3,” the third installment of this legendary epic, the war has come to a climax -- the Flood continue to grow in numbers and strength, the armies of Earth are scattered and decimated, and the Covenant threaten to activate the Halo, effectively destroying all life in the galaxy. Reviews on Halo 3 [Xbox 360]

"You've witnessed the pre-lease hype, you've read the raving reviews, so I probably don't have to tell you that Halo 3 is a great game. I won't bother you with details about the great graphics, the AI, the story etc... Instead, I will try to explain why playing Halo 3 is so much fun for me.

I just finished the single player campaign and it indeed is a fantastic game, I enjoyed it from start to finish. But not because it does anything new or special. Basically, Halo 3 is merely a standard First Person Shooter, just like there are many others. It doesn't even add much compared to Halo 2.

But still it is something special. Why? Because it is so damn good at being a standard FPS:

 • The health system: no hunting around for stupid red cross boxes to refill your health. Just hide somewhere safe for a few seconds and your health bar restores itself. Briljant.
 • The save game system: Regular checkpoints that automatically save your progress. If you die, you always return very close to where you were. Which means no repeating of long sections over and over again. It also means you can play the game for short bursts, just continue where you left off the last time, do a few checkpoints, stop, and continue the next day.
 • The vehicles: Driving the warthogs was fun in Halo 1 and 2 and luckily there's a lot of driving in Halo 3 too. And not only in Warthogs. I like getting behind the wheel and let my friend man the turret at the back. But I also like being driven around while handling the turret, great for sections where you're not exactly sure where to go. You'll love the final warthog escape scene, it's wild.
 • The weapons/ammo system: In other FPS games I often find myself dutifully exploring every corner of every area, to make sure I don't miss any new weapons or upgrades and also to find ammo or health boxes. Boooorrrrinnnnggg. In Halo 3 you don't have to. Weapons are everywhere, every killed bad guy drops one and you can carry only two at a time anyway. There's no ammo to be found, if you're out you simply pick up a new gun. Health restores automatically. Result: More focus on the story, the mission or the fight at hand.
 • Multiple strategies for everything: Though the storyline is pretty linear, almost every boss or problem can be tackled in multiple ways. E.g. to kill a scarab you can attack on foot with a simple gun, hop on a warthog and use its turret, drive a warthog and let a friend use the turret or simply jump on the beasty from above. You can even go GTA-style: pull a Covenant driver from its Ghost and use that to attack.

The above is what makes Halo 3 such a joy to play. And combined with the great graphics, the excellent enemy AI and the cool story this results in one of 360's best games. Get it."
