Rowdy on The House of the Dead: OVERKILL [Wii], 26-02-2009
"House of the Dead: OVERKILL is a spoof - or should I say hommage? - to the Grindhouse movies of the '70s. Attention has been made to every aspect of the game and it really shows. Graphics look very good and sharp, especially for a Wii title. There's lots of blood, limbs can be blown off and the look of the game retains that particular combination of grainy filtering, use of color and use of fonts. All in all, this game scores big in the visual department.
Music and sound effects also hit the spot, but when compared to previous installments in The House of the Dead series the game really excels dialogue-wise. Both Agent G and Detective Isaac Washington deliver plenty of wisecracks that will leave you laugh out loud. I never heard that many abusive words combined with utter nonsense when playing a videogame. I guess the easily offended may keep that in mind before purchasing this game...
Because light gun games usually tend to be short and don't have that much replay value, Sega has implented a few fun mini-games, such as Victim Support (help people to escape by shooting zombies), Stayin' Alive (survive floods of zombies) and Money Shot II (shoot on targets). Besides that, there are plenty of secrets to unlock. These mini-games work fine although they tend to bore quickly to be honest.
Although there aren't that many levels, and the game can be completed within a few hours, sticking to the main story is the most fun. Once finished there's also the Directors Cut to complete, so all in all there's plenty to shoot at really!
Using your light gun feels great and I don't have had any issues aiming my gun at the Wii Sensor Bar. It feels accurate and listens well to your commands. It really feels like your holding a big Magnum Revolver I guess.
To put it in short: when playing this game it feels just like I'm standing in the arcade, going mental on a great First Person Shooter. Awesome game, cool atmosphere, great replay value, too bad it's a bit short."
