VampyreBe on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney [Nintendo DS], 14-01-2009
"What to say about Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney ? This is a weird game... And that's probably why I like it so much... In this game, you are a brand new attorney out of school, and you are about to defend your clients.
I must say at start, that it is much more a text game, than anything else. No stunning 3D graphics, just beautiful 2D painted backgrounds. All the rest is text. So, there is a lot to read, and I assure you, you better read everything carefully. My daughter hates it for that (nothing really happening, just text). But what a story line ! I just finished it, and it took me hours ! I didn't timed it, but it must be somewhere between 20 and 30 hours gameplay.
There are two main modes : the first one, is also the thougher one. You are in court, with all your evidences, and you just need to find some mistakes, or inconsistencies, or lies in the testimonies. It may seem obvious when starting the game, but in the end, I can tell it is really challenging...
The second mode, is when you need to collect evidences. That's the easier part, clues are very easy to catch.
For the storyline, it is awesome ! In this game, you have a total of 5 different cases. Though these cases are totally different and separated in the game, you'll quickly find some links between them, making the game experience so nice. I won't spoil anything, but the writer for this game is a really good one !
Don't take this game too seriously though... The cases are all but... realistic... Without spoiling anything, imagine counter-interrogate a parrot in a court ! That's what's also so funny about this game. The characters are charismatic, and drawn like mangas, with their weird expressions, making them so nice, and hilarous !
The game is divided as I told before in 5 chapters. Those chapters are also divided into days (usually 3 days, with some research and court). One "session" will take you easily 45 to 1 hour to complete. That might be long, especially for the only bad thing about this game... You can't save when you want... Well, you can, but when you restart the game, you'll need to restart from the start of the day you were.
The second bad point is the replayability... which is equal to zero (if you finished the game, you know what had happened, and finding the evidences to show is only memory game).
For the sound, it is also excellent... Each character has its own theme, and the music suddenly stops when in dramatic moments...
To conclude, if you want to spend some hours discovering the hilarous characters, great storyline, and nice graphics, don't miss Phoenix Wright... And if you want to play the newest games without having played this game, please don't ! Because in all the sequels, they take back some characters, or even some parts of previous storyline... To enjoy the Phoenix Wright serie (ace attorney, justice for all, trials and tribulations, apollo justice ace attorney, and a new title to be released soon), please, do it in this order...
