Plot: During the confrontation between Nikolaos and Phillip, where Phillip reminds her she promised Anita wouldn't be harmed, Anita learns that Phillip takes his orders from the Master of the City. Nikolaos attacks Phillip, but Anita prevents her from killing him. Nikolaos leaves as screams from the house alert them all to the fact that the Freak Party has been broken up by the congregation of the Church of Eternal Life. Fighting their way to the car, Anita, Phillip and Willie--Nikolaos's flunky--manage to get away safely. In the car, Phillip confirms that Nikolaos had ordered him to seduce Anita and bend her to the vampires' wishes. At home, Anita showers and falls asleep, only to once again have her dreams plagued by Jean-Claude, blood and food. Anita awakens to the sickening realization that Jean-Claude has done something to her. A phone call from Dolph takes Anita to another vampire murder. The vampire has had her heart ripped out and has been decapitated. The vampire turns out to be Theresa. A trip to Ronnie Sims's office reunites Anita with a woman named Beverly. Anita saved her life many years before, when a vampire attacked Beverly. Now a memeber of Humans Against Vampires, Beverly assures Ronnie and Anita that HAV does not have a death squad killing vampires; they work within the law. However, some people have begun bragging about killing vampires, and Beverly agrees to find out any information she can. After Beverly leaves, Anita fills in Ronnie on everything that has happened, and her belief that a HAV death squad--let alone any human--is responsible for the vampire murders.

Plot: Phillip's kiss turns into a bite on the neck. When Anita is confronted by one of the other party goers, she decides to go outside for some air. In the woods behind the house, Anita finds a cemetery and discovers Zachary attempting to raise a zombie that is over 100 years old. Usually this feat cannot be accomplished without a major sacrifice--usually a human sacrifice. Theresa is tormenting Zachary, telling him that if he can't raise the zombie she has been given permission from Nikolaos to kill him. To prevent Zachary being killed, Anita acts as a focus to assist him to raise the zombie. After an elaborate ritual, the zobie is raised, and Anita now knows that Zachary is himself a zombie. He uses a voodoo charm called a gris-gris to remain 'alive.' The gris-gris requires human blood in order to work, and Anita regrets her decision to stop the vampires from killing Zachary. As the vampires start to torture the zombie, Anita flees the cemetery, only to run into Nikolaos in the woods. Anita informs Nikolaos that Zachary raised the zombie, and demands that Nikolaos stop Theresa and her fellow vampires from torturing it. Nikolaos agrees, if Anita will allow her to taste Anita's blood. Anita agrees to let Nikolaos use the wound Phillip made, but no fresh bites are permitted. As Nikolaos moves in, she tricks Anita into revealing that her vampire mind tricks aren't affecting Anita any more, a fact that makes Nikolaos angry. However, before she can act, Phillip bursts onto the scene, demanding Nikolaos leave Anita alone.

Plot: Dead Dave's is a bar owned by a vampire who used to be a cop. Luther, the bar tender, tells Anita that Valentine is apparently responsible for Phillip's being a vampire junkie. Valentine attacked Phillip when he was only a child. When Anita asks Luther for Valentine's daytime resting place, he refuses to give her the information, both to protect himself and Dave, and to protect Anita from going to prison for killing a vampire without a warrant. Ronnie Sims calls Anita to tell her that a human group known as Humans Against Vampires (HAV) may have formed a death squad that could be responsible for the vampire murders. Anita tells Ronnie about the Freak Party and goes home to get ready. Inside her apartment, Anita finds evidence that Edward has returned, leaving her a present of a sawed-off shotgun, and a note informing her she has 24 hours to divulge Nikolaos's resting place. Anita picks Phillip up and lets it slip that she knows about Valentine. Phillip isn't happy, but his revenge is that Anita has to pretend to be his lover while they are at the Freak Party. Anita manages to piss off several people at the party before learning that Edward is at the party, masquerading as a freak named Teddy. Phillip, meanwhile, is being pawed by all the women at the party, and when he verbally lashes out at them, he drags Anita into the bathroom. She offers to leave with Phillip so that he isn't tempted further, but Phillip refuses. He also refuses to divulge the name of the vampire giving him orders. Realizing that they are being watched and Anita hasn't exactly been acting like a lover, Phillip moves in for a kiss.

Plot: Anita's day begins with a trip to the offices of Animators, Inc. and a confrontation with her boss, Bert, about her recent assignment with the vampires. She tells Bert she won't work with vampires--ever again! Anita manages to enrage a fellow co-worker when she offers anti-vampire information to a mother whose son is considering joining the Church of Eternal Life. The Church is run by vampires and offers eternal life, in the form of changing its congregation into vampires. After having it out with the co-worker, Anita is faced with Phillip, the vampire junkie from Guilty Pleasures the night before. Over breakfast, Phillip provides Anita with information on how Nikolaos punishes her minions that fail her--she puts them in coffins and uses crosses to keep them in there. Anita fears this may have happened to Jean-Claude because he intervened on her behalf. Phillip goes along with Anita to question Rebecca Miles, who was the "property" of one of the murdered vampires. After a misunderstanding that results in Rebecca attacking Anita, Anita learns that the murdered vampire was a regular at Freak Parties, where vampire junkies allow vampires to feed from them. Anita decides to crash one of parties for information, since it appears the murdered vampires all frequented the parties, and Phillip agrees to go with her to show her the ropes, since he used to frequent the parites himself. Anita takes Phillip home and then heads to Dead Dave's bar for more answers.

Plot: The vampire in the golden mask is named Valentine. The mask covers burns caused by holy water, and Anita wielded it. Valentine attacked her once, nearly killing her and causing the scars she carries on her arm and neck. Valentine promises to come for Anita and finish the job he started, once Anita finds the vampire murderer. Anita drives home for a well-deserved night's sleep only to be confronted by another person from her past--Edward. Anita is called the Executioner by the vampires. They call Edward Death, and even Anita fears him. Edward has discovered that Anita met with the Master of the City, and he wants to know where her lair is. When Anita won't tell him, Edward gives her a few days to divulge the information or else he'll be back and things won't go as pleasantly. Anita goes to bed, but her dreams are plagued by visions of Jean-Claude attacking and feeding from her. Anita is awakened by her friend, Veronica 'Ronnie' Sims. She tells Ronnie about the previous night, especially what happened with her friend Catherine, and warns Ronnie to watch her back.

Plot: Anita's fight with the wererats is interrupted by their king breaking through the wall into the room. The wererat king is angry that his minions have heeded the request of Nikolaos against his orders. He advises Anita to do what Nikolaos requests, or she could be hurt. Sensing the approach of a vampire, the wererat king leaves moments before Theresa enters the room to fetch Anita to Nikolaos's chamber. True to form, within minutes of meeting Nikolaos, Anita angers the Master of the City, causing Nikolaos to unleash her powers in a staggering attack that almost leaves Anita at the vampire's mercy. Nikolaos tells Anita that if she doesn't help the vampires find the murderer her mind will be destroyed. Nikolaos then calls in Zachary, an animator who has raised a zombie who witnessed one of the vampire murders. The zombie can't answer Zachary's questions to Nikolaos's satisfaction, and Zachary's attempts to force the zombie to answer breaks his memory, meaning he'll never answer questions as long as he's animated. Nikolaos snaps, forcing Jean-Claude to fend off his mistress while Anita and Zachary run for their lives. Before emerging into the Circus of the Damned, under which Nikolaos's lair resides, Anita is pursued and overcome by glowing blue eyes. Other than making her own eyes turn blue, they seem to have no other effect. The ordeal appears to be over, until a vampire in a golden mask arrives to confront Anita.

Jean-Claude intervenes, but only because the entire altercation has taken place in full view of the audience, and he has to run damage control or risk losing his business. Anita ire is raised again when Jean-Claude assures her that if her friend goes to the police and reports that Aubrey has taken control of her that she will be killed. So, against her better judgment, Anita allows Aubrey to force her friend to forget what has happened. At Nikolaos's lair, Anita is introduced to a vampire, Theresa, who claims to be Aubrey's master, but when Anita calls her on the lie, and explains how she knows it's a lie, Aubrey attacks her and knocks her out. Anita awakens in a stone-walled, subterranean room, where the vampires leave her as they go to inform Nikolaos of Anita's arrival. Anita is soon set upon by a group of wererats< who have supposedly been sent by Nikolaos to 'entertain' her. Plot: Anita Blake is a vampire hunter ironically hired by vampires to hunt down someone who is murdering vampires in the city of St. Louis. Her investigation unwittingly begins during a bachelorette party held at Guilty Pleasures, a strip club owned by Jean-Claude, a master vampire. Anita's dislike of vampires becomes painfully obvious when a vampire named Robert 'attacks' a man named Phillip, who turns out to be a vampire junkie--someone who gets off on having a vampire suck his blood. Matters worsen when one of Anita's friends has her mind controlled by a vampire, and Anita's control over the dead helps her to resist the vampire's persuasion. Disaster is averted when Anita's pager goes off, and she is summoned by Detective Dolph Storr to lend her paranormal expertise to a murder in a local cemetery. The groundskeeper has been eviscerated, and it's Anita's determination that ghouls are to blame. However, she doesn't believe the ghouls are from that cemetery. Returning to Guilty Pleasures to take her friends home, Anita discovers that another vampire, Aubrey, has exerted mind control over her other friend, to the point that she is now totally within his power; his to do with how and when he pleases. When he attempts to do the same to Anita, she resists. However, her fear excites Aubrey so that he loses control and attacks her.
