Daniel Boone And A Broken Down Car

daniel-boone.jpgThe strangest and best thing happened to me the other day. It was my weekly day off and I had made an appointment with the garage for a restorative maintenance on my car. That same day I made friends with an American pioneer and his trusty Indian companion.

So I stationed my one year old son with my parents and I was heading for the garage. When I made the appointment a few weeks ago, the guys at the garage agreed to let me use another car for the time being, so you can imagine my surprise when I walked in, handed over the car keys and got to hear they didn’t had an available car for me. Ah well, I left my car with them and said I wanted to receive a call when they were finished.

I walked out of the garage, flushed my planning for that day down the drain and called my dad. He picked me up and we drove off to my parents home. The lack of an useable car at the garage did bothered me a little though, but all that faded away fast when I walked in my parents home and saw my little boy playing on the floor with his grandma. I quickly joined in and we had a great time.

All this playing around made my little friend tired, so I carried him to bed not much later. When I returned downstairs we had some coffee and dad asked if I would mind if he started a DVD. When he grabbed a copy of Daniel Boone, a well known TV series from 1964,  I thought by myself; ‘O no, anything but that old crap.’,  but I decided to give it a go. I ended up glued to the screen, watching two episodes non-stop…

The episodes I watched where called The Trek and The Mound Builders. The Trek starred the late Aldo Ray as John Benton, a villain with the heart at the right place. He is captured by Daniel and the two get to travel to a town in order put John to justice. The Mound Builders starred underrated actor Henry Silva as Zapotec, an Aztec Indian who seeks Daniel Boone’s help in order to find a lost valley. I haven’t seen that much movies with Henry Silva unfortunately, but I’ll never forget his performance in Above The Law, where he played the evil Kurt Zagon. His role as Kane in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, one my favourite TV series ever, also comes to mind while writing this. A truly great actor with the ultimate bad-guy face.

I don’t know what it was that kept me glued to the television screen, I was expecting the worse but got treated on some very entertaining episodes. Of course, as a whole it seems very much dated when compared to TV series nowadays, but I found watching this to be very refreshing actually. No fast paced camera shots, no needless cursing and nudity every few seconds and no complexed storylines to follow. Just Daniel Boone, his family and his best friend Mingo, encountering different adventures each episode. Brilliant stuff.

Daniel Boone and Mingo: classic black-and-white action

In the end I had my car back, fixed and all, whilst spending a great day with my loved ones AND getting to meet Daniel Boone and friends. Now if I just was able to play videogames that day, it would be even more perfect… ;)
