Pan’s Grape River

panlab.JPGI’ve seen a few really great movies lately. And some great series and sitcom stuff, but let’s talk movies now. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and Mystic River (2003) that is. All classics.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a really sad movie. It’s drama, drama and more drama. Johnny Depp stars in this movie and he’s doing great. I hate his Pirates movies, I’m definitely not a Johnny Depp fan, but he was just really good in this movie. Leonardo DiCaprio’s also great in this movie. He’s a autistic kid in this movie, the movie is from 1993, but it seems DiCaprio was already a acting pro when he was just a kid. The movie tells the story of a poor family who struggle with money… Dad’s gone, mom’s really ehm… ‘huge’. Ah well, I think everybody should see this movie, the movie is ‘real’, it’s a classic in my humble opinion.

Music admin Metal Martin loaned Pan’s Labyrinth to me. I don’t like Hellboy (same director: Del Torro), but people said Pan’s Labyrinth is a great movie. So, of course, I wanted to see it. The start wasn’t that great. Just this girl Ofelia in Spain, in the Civil War war zone, sad mother, etc. Drama stuff, but kinda boring. The girl hates it. But she loves the creatures that are around her. We see all these weird fairy tales from outta nowhere. Are they real? What’s this all about? Is Ofelia not just a girl, but really a princess? From this point I start to like the movie. Also, in the ‘real’ world, we see some heavy bloody stuff - it’s just so different from scene to scene. The whole style of this movie is different. And the end, damn, that was just a slap in the face. This movie rocks. A Must-See.

And now for something completely different: Mystic River. I like Clint Eastwood as an actor, but the movies he directs are also really good. Million Dollar Baby was cool, but Mystic River is even better. An all-star cast (Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon) and a really great plot makes this movie flawless. Three young kids, a serious messed up tragedy, and their lives are changed… Many years later they are reunited because somebody dies. And that’s just the intro of this movie. What more can I say? Go see this movie. You’ll love it…
