In 2009 the newest Red Sonja movie will be in cinemas worldwide. Rose McGowan will star as Red Sonja. In 1985 the first Red Sonja movie was released, the 2009 movie is not Part 2, it’s a remake. In 1985 Brigitte Nielsen was Sonja. Who is Red Sonja? Red Sonja is a famous comic character.

Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, first appeared in the Conan comics published by Marvel. She remained a Conan side-kick, but eventually became popular enough to get her own comic series. Red Sonja’s origin story is like this: she lives with her family in eastern-Europe in a medieval setting. Bad guys see the village, kill everybody and burn down everything… Sonja is the only one who survives this drama. The goddess Scathach decides to help her. Sonja becomes the strong Red Sonja with deadly swords!

Marvel Comics published a lot Red Sonja stories, but these days the comic stories are published by Dynamite. You can say, she is the perfect definition of so-called ‘bad-girl comic art’: Sexy tough comic babes in action! She always runs around in a bikini-like costume and saves the day.

The first movie featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as Kalidor. That was just another Conan dude, but I think they were not able to use that name. The movie was really corny and that’s exactly why I liked it! Plus: the 1985 Red Sonja movie got a pretty good Ennio Morricone soundtrack. I think in the 2009 remake there also we be a Conan-like dude. We’ll see what will happen. The movie is ‘presented’ by the world-famous Robert Rodriguez, so this movie will be huge I guess. Is Rose McGowan sexy enough to be Sonja? Perhaps she’s to skinny to be the tough Red Sonja?
