Comic Art in Hiphop

rzaavatar.JPGAfter all these really cool rock cd’s with comic cover art and comics inspired by rock bands (check Metal Martin’s blog right here), here is the official Comic-Art-in-Hiphop blog! Let’s start with the all-time greatest Hiphop crew: the Wu-Tang Clan.

Wu-Tang - the whole click - loves comics. They rhyme about comics (”Swingin through your town like your neighborhood Spider-Man” - “Dr. Doom, prepare for the boom”) and Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah calls himself Tony Stark and Iron Man all the time. In fact, Ghostface’s first album was called Iron Man. The RZA, ‘leader’ of the Wu-Tang Clan, got comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz illustrating a really cool cover for his album Bobby Digital In Stereo. And The RZA’s newest cd Digi Snacks also got a really cool illustration (including a lot of chicks) as a cover. Also really cool is the cover art of GZA’s first cd Liquid Swords. It’s a illustration of a bunch of mc’s with swords on a chessboard - one of the best album covers ever imo! Check:

And Hiphop in general? Well, we got a DJ Clark Kent and a DJ Green Lantern. And there’s this Hiphop crew called X-Clan. It’s almost like Comics are a part of Hiphop. Bill Sienkiewicz, the dude who did the RZA cover, also did EPMD’s Business As Usual. And check the cover art of the first OutKast cd Atliens. That’s not just a illustration, it’s also designed as a comic. Including Publisher logo, Price and Issue Number! And check the cover art of MF Doom’s cd Operation Doomsday. Guess where MF Doom got his rhyme name from? I guess he loves Fantastic Four villains! Also check the famous Snoopy parody cover: Snoop Dogg’s first cd Doggystle.

No, back to Wu-Tang again. The Clan even worked together with Comic Publisher Image Comics and a bunch of artists to create the comic Nine Rings Of Wu-Tang. It’s about a bunch of kung-fu guys with swords. And just a few weeks ago, the official Method Man (also a Wu-Tang member) Graphic Novel was released. Check:

Ohyeah, almost forgot:

…and let’s not forget Snoop Dogg’s fictional comicbook Hood Of Horror! Haha :D
