New Cool Collective at the Sugarfactory Amsterdam, 17 december
It’s been a few weeks but you deserve to know about this great swinging band. It was a cold night… it was a very cold night, but I knew a place that would definitely warm me up. So I put my hat on, put on my gloves and my super thermo long underwear and headed to the Sugarfactory. To see one of the most swinging big bands around: the New Cool Collective big band! This band has been around for a while and consists of a mixture of some very experienced musicians and some young talented dogs. But most of all they’re all talented and good musicians. Some of the musicians are Benjamin Herman playing the funky sax and Frank van Dok on hot percussion who both founded the band. And with Anton Goudsmit playing some kick ass guitar and David Rockefeller on the cool trumpet, to name but a few. It’s not your basic Ellington jazz big band but they play some swinging jazz, latin, funky, afro-beat tunes that make everybody swing. The horns section with trumpets, trombones and saxophones are dressed in sharp looking suits. A bass player, keys, guitar, drum player and two percussionists complete the gang.
When they started everyone was still a bit numb from the cold. However it didn’t take them that long to turn up the heat and by the time they finished their first song they had everyone moving and shaking their booty.
And it shows that the musician have a lot of fun. They joke around, make funny faces, shout out to each other to compliment a solo and have a great laugh. They played a two hour set without a break giving most members the time to go crazy on a solo. So in the end everyone went back into the cold but this time sweaty and happy…
