Gears of War leads the top 10 2007

gowava.JPGThe votes are in. Here they are, the top 10 most popular games of 2007:

10. Final Fantasy X [PlayStation 2]
9. F.E.A.R. [PC]
8. Far Cry [PC]
7. Need for Speed Carbon [PC]
6. Call of Duty [PC]
5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess [Wii]
4. Halo 2 [Xbox]
3. Half-Life 2 [PC]
2. God of War [PlayStation 2]
1. Gears of War [Xbox 360]

So what do we see here:

The first thing that hits me is that some of these have not been released in 2007 at all. So how can they be in 2007’s top 10? Let me explain: this is the top 10 most popular games as indicated by the number of times their data has been requested from our Game Collector video game cataloging software.

For example, God of War (a 2005 game) being on number two means that in 2007 many Game Collector have users have added that game to their personal game database. Either because they just purchased it ( I purchased its Platinum edition quite late too) or because they just started using Game Collector to catalog their entire collection.

A PS2 game on 10. PS2? Does anyone still use that old box? Mine has been gathering dust for years. FF is not my thing anyway.

Far Cry I did play, on the 360. Nice game, but certainly not worthy of a top 10 position IMO.

NFS Carbon, yes! I did spend a lot of time on that one, again on the 360. Cool game, great cars, not the best racing controls, but a lot of fun. Check my NFS Carbon review.

Twilight Princess, now THAT is one worthy of a top 10 position. Most absorbing game I have played in a long time. Start it and you’re hooked for a couple of weeks. Both me and AJ loved Twilight Princess.

Halo 2? Eh… wait a minute, shouldn’t that be Halo THREE? Another sleeper hit? I checked the rest of the top 2007 and found Halo 3 on position 17. I found Halo 2 too a bit boring and way too long, I liked Halo 3 a lot better.

Half Life 2 on on position 3. Okay, I can live with that. But I think the release of the Orange Box may have something to do with that position.

God of War, as in “God of War ONE”. What happened to God of War TWO? Ah, there it is, on position 16.

The number one is a worthy one IMO. Truly a great game. I almost forgot how great it was, until we starting playing it in coop mode again, here at the office. Looking back, I think it’s better than Halo 3.

You may also note the number of PC games in the list. In the weekly top 10 they are usually not as prominent, maybe the PC games gradually accumulated a lot of hits over the year. Personally I play games on consoles only, insert disc, play game. That’s how I like it. It looks like many GC users are buying PC games though. Or maybe “buying” isn’t the right word here?
