Adding Links and Files

Contents:

Introduction

Book Collector allows you not only to catalog your collection, but to interact with it as well. You can create links to ebooks as well as add hyperlinks to both online and local sources which can be accessed from within your database. You can also add images, interior art and background images.

Note: Book Collector does not open your linked files it uses your default Windows software. For example if your default reader for .pdf files is Adobe Acrobat Reader and you click a .pdf link, Book Collector will tell Adobe Acrobat to open the pdf. Local Links

Adding a local link allows you to open a file on your computer from within Book Collector. This can be an ebook, audiobook, an author image, or anything else you deem appropriate. You can link to any file on your computer and it will appear in your books Detail Template. Images will also appear embedded (as shown in Figure 1 above) in selected templates. Linked files will open using your default Windows software.

If you have an e-book or audiobook stored on your hard drive you can link it to your database and play it by clicking the link within Book Collector's Detail Template. The book will open the file in your default media player. If you have a lot of e-book/audiobooks you can add them in batches, we have a separate topic explaining this:

To add a backdrop image:

  • Open the Edit Book screen and click the Covers tab.

  • Click the Backdrop tab and you can now add your own image:

    • Click Browse to find a local image
    • Click Find Online to use our built in Cover Finder to find high resolution images from Google
    • Click Acquire to obtain an image from an image scanner (must be setup and selected via the Options menu)
    • Click Settings to view the Image Settings screen within Book Collector's main options

To use a backdrop image as a background for your Detail Template you will need to select an appropriate template. You can change your Detail Template by clicking View > Details View Template > Vee 8 > Backdrop

N.B. Backdrop images will display differently depending on which version of Internet Explorer you use. Even if you do not use Internet Explorer as your default browser it must be installed in order for the templates to display correctly. We recommend using the latest version of IE for the best experience.
