How do I install and use the Opticon OPN-2001 scanner?

The Opticon OPN-2001 laser barcode scanner is directly supported by the Collectorz.com programs, so setup is quick and easy:

Using Windows:

  • First, download and install the Opticon OPN-2001 driver from our Download page.
  • Then, connect the scanner to your computer using the included USB cable.
  • Start your Collectorz.com program and choose Tools / Find Scanner from the menu.
  • After a few moments, the program will report that it has found the Opticon scanner.
(on some computers, this may take a couple of minutes!)

That's it, the scanner is now ready for use.
BTW: you only have to "Find" the scanner once. In the future, you can just start your software and start scanning.

Using a Mac:

NOTE: Do not insert Mini CD's into your Mac slot drive.

  • No need to install extra drivers, they are already included in your software.
  • Just connect the scanner to your Mac using the included USB cable.
  • Start your Collectorz.com program.
  • Start scanning. (No need to click "Find Scanner")

The software will automatically open the 'Add automatically' screen with the barcode field already filled.

Alternatively, you can walk up to your book case and scan a number of barcodes at a time. When you reconnect the scanner to your Mac, the Collectorz.com software will open the Advanced search screen and add all the scanned codes to the search queue.

Note: we have heard of cases where the Opticon OPN-2001 does not work with a Mac G5.

My Opticon OPN-2001 scanner is not working properly, help!

If your Opticon OPN-2001 scanner is not working properly after installing it, please follow these steps to find out why.

No scan beam?
When you press the scan button you don't get a red beam or here the buzzer.

When you receive your Opticon scanner, please connect it to your PC or Mac and make sure it's charged before you use it disconnected.

  • Connect to USB power charge and a red light: charging the battery.
  • A green light means the battery is fully charged.

Normal scan beam but scanner does not scan?
Please try scanning at a different angle, the scanner beam has a dead zone.

The scanner scans and beeps fine but no bar codes appear in the software?
The scanned bar codes are not showing in the Search queue of the Add Automatically screen.

Please check:

  • That you have successfully installed the scanner. Use menu Tools | Find scanner
  • If you can scan bar codes with the scanner connected AND disconnected

My scanner is confused and does not scan all bar codes
Reset your scanner to factory defaults, this will solve the problem.

Simultaneously press and hold down both the scan button and the clear button for 10 seconds. All settings will be reset to factory defaults.
When you press down both buttons the scanner will flash a red blinking light till it's been reset.
Then it will show a green light.

'No Scanner Found' and on Windows Vista?
Always Start an Application in Administrator Mode on Windows Vista.
If you have problems with the normal scanner installation, please try the following.
Under Vista the user must open the Collectorz.com software as Administrator (Hook on Properties of the .exe) for 'Find scanner'...
The scanner was found (UAC-rights on search), the found COM-settings were written (rights to write).

To set this property, just right-click on the program's shortcut, and click the Advanced button on the Shortcut page to get to the Advanced Properties dialog.
You’ll see a dialog with a checkbox for “Run as administrator”.
From now on, the application will always run as administrator if you use the shortcut to launch it. (You’ll be prompted by UAC if you have it enabled).

Previous Flic scanner owner?
Your Flic scanner set up is interfering with the Opticon.
Please uninstall the Flic by deleting the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microvision.

Search for this key using the Search option in Windows. After deleting this file, restart your PC and try again with the Opticon scanner.

Using a Sprint USB Air Card?
The drivers for the air card are interfering with the driver for the scanner. If you uninstall the air card, the scanner works without problems.

Using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse?
The bluetooth module can interfere with the installation of the Opticon scanner. If your scanner does not initialize please disable the bluetooth device and try again.
For example, Microsoft's wireless Notebook Opitcal Mouse 3000 conflicts with the Opticon. Unplug it and use an USB mouse to work with the scanner.

NOTE:ISBNs start with 978 or 979. Not all barcodes you see on a book are necessarily the ISBN. On paperbacks, scan the barcode on the inside front cover and not the one on the back cover.

Can I download the Opticon OPN-2001 manual?

Included in the scanner box is a mini-disc with the Opticon manual.
Don't use this CD on your Mac, it is for PC only.

You can download the Opticon OPN-2001 manual on the Opticon website.

How do I clear the barcodes from the scanner's memory?

Scanned bar codes are automatically removed from the scanner's memory when you connect it to the Collectorz.com software.
All bar codes will appear in the Search Queue of the Add Automatically screen. When you disconnect the scanner you start with an empty memory.

If you want to delete a single bar code from the memory, press the clear button and scan the same barcode again.
If the scanned barcode is deleted successfully, the orange LED will light and the buzzer will sound.

Press and hold down the clear button for 6 seconds and all stored bar codes will be deleted.
To delete all stored bar codes you can also use the Collectorz.com software of course.

How do I enable or disable the beep?
