Patrick Machielse

Mac OS X development

My name is Patrick Machielse and I've been working for Collectorz.com since 2007, first as a contractor and more recently as an employee. I have earned masters degrees in both Science & Policy and Manufacturing Engineering, and I even worked in a factory that produced sanitary units for trains. Eventually I found myself as a software engineer, specialized in creating desktop applications for Macintosh computers.

For relaxation I like riding my bicycle, a favorite pastime in The Netherlands. I also enjoy foreign travel and hiking in the mountains. Apart from those activities I try to soak up as much culture as I can by reading, watching television (no, that's not an oxymoron) and going to the theatre. I increasingly find that I have no preference for a particular genre or style, but that I can enjoy most arts, provided the performance stands up to scrutiny. Some of my cultural favorites -- in no particular order -- are: movies with Michael Caine (outstanding examples are the Harry Palmer series and Get Carter!), The Big Lebowsky, the television series Yes (Prime) Minister, Blackadder (series 3+4), Sledge Hammer!, Profit!, Der Fahnder (episodes with Klaus Wenneman), and Kir Royal, books by Reve, Hermans, Bob den Uyl and Maarten Biesheuvel, songs by Super Furry Animals, The Pixies, Devo, Die Arzte, Kraftwerk, Schubert, Hugo Wolf, Tom Lehrer and Drs P., comics by Hanco Kolk and Peter de Wit (especially Gilles de Geus), Mark Retera, and Rene Goscinny, plays by Wim T. Schippers. If some of these titles and names sound unfamiliar to you, you may be missing out...

Collections

Unlike some of my colleagues I don't have a huge collection to administer (and boast about...). However, I do have a few small collections (if you can call them that) which I nurture, and which have special meaning to me. First of all I own a selection of the books by Dutch author Karel van het Reve, and I'm trying to purchase the missing items (a realistic goal because his oeuvre isn't very large). His work consists mainly of perceptive short stories and essays, written down in his very personal style of dry wit. My other 'pocket' collection is a complete set of Van Kooten & De Bie LPs, including the masterful 'Gouden Doden' EP. True classics each and every one, and no home should be without them...

At Collectorz.com

At Collectorz.com my job is to maintain and further develop the Book, Music, and Movie Collector programs for Macintosh. I'll be devoting a substantial amount of time in taking these programs to the next level and I hope you'll notice the improvements we have planned.
When I'm not developing at the Collectorz.com head quarters I'm working as a freelance Mac developer for international clients, which are mainly based in the United States.
